Today marks the dawn of a new era, the day we at Follow My Vote release our Intellectual Property (IP) covering our patent-pending architecture for a secure end-to-end verifiable blockchain-based voting system capable of securely hosting honest elections with mathematically provable results.

We’ve come to a point in human history where faith in the democratic process has reached all-time lows, especially here in the United States. At Follow My Vote, we believe there is still hope for humanity in this regard.

Ever since we inked our patent pending designs back in 2014, we’ve had aspirations to bring our designs to life, enabling citizen’s throughout the world to cast their votes with integrity on Election Day. However, taking on such a massive endeavor comes with it’s own set of challenges.

We have learned and accomplished a tremendous amount at Follow My Vote over the years, while trying to bring our vision to life. Throughout this time period, we’ve seen various new voting systems come and go, all claiming to be better than the last. However, when analyzing these systems we’ve detected issues that need to be addressed before being implemented on a mass scale. Despite these issues, some of these solutions are actually gaining traction, which is also concerning to us at Follow My Vote.

We’ve seen widespread infighting in the voting space over the years, mainly between those that are all for adopting modern technology where possible to improve the political process for everyone involved vs those that don’t. We have technology providers developing and testing solutions, while university researchers speak out against their efforts and shine light on the vulnerabilities that exist with these solutions. There has been so much back and forth over the years and a lot of misinformation being thrown around that, as a result, it’s almost as if the majority of people have become convinced that technology cannot save us. We simply disagree.

With this in mind, we are releasing this IP today, as a gift to humanity, in hopes to restart the conversation when it comes to question: “Can ‘We the People’ figure out a way to securely conduct verifiable elections online?”

Let’s be real. If you could vote conveniently from your smartphone on Election Day and be reassured by the world-wide technological community at large that your vote was cast as intended and counted as cast, wouldn’t you? That’s what we are really striving for at Follow My Vote.

From Follow My Vote’s perspective we’ve already designed the voting system that, once developed, will have the upmost integrity in existence. Just keep in mind, it’s going to take us some time to bring it to life.

In the meantime, we encourage you to closely review our patent application as published on Google Patents and get involved in the conversation.

Upon review of our patent application, we’d like to immediately draw your attention to the figures or drawings, Figure 1 and Figure 2.

Figure 1, as shown below, is simply a list of key components that exist within our voting system design.

Figure 2, as shown below, showcases our (once patent-pending / now open-source) anonymous voting key registration protocol, which enables someone to have their identity verified for voter eligibility and subsequently be granted access to their eligible election contests in an anonymous way so that, when they cast their votes, they will be able to literally follow their vote(s) into the blockchain-based ballot box and confirm with their own eyes that their vote was cast as intended and counted as cast.

In short, the above figure is the secret sauce with respect to our invention.

Also keep in mind that this powerful protocol could be leveraged outside of the voting space/use case. Another way to interpret the way in which this protocol works is that, based on the identifying information submitted, this person is authorized to do [fill in the blank] anonymously. So, in other words, it could allow someone to submit an identification submission and have a public key anonymously registered to them, which grants them access to something they otherwise wouldn’t have access to, but we digress.

At this point, we’d like to turn your attention to the patent application’s claim language, as it has changed quite a bit over the years, due to shifting from a system and method patent application filing, to simply a method patent application filing. The updated language also more closely reflects the process outlined in Figure 2 above.

While reviewing the patent application, please also take note of and credit the inventor’s of this paradigm shifting innovation that has the real potential to uplift humanity: Adam Ernest (CEO @ Follow My Vote), Nathaniel Hourt (CTO @ Follow My Vote), and Daniel Larimer (CTO @ Block.one).

As a final note with respect to our patent application’s content, we want to be clear that the way in which we’ve described how public key cryptography is leveraged within our system was intentional, although it is a bit atypical of those that have filed for and received cryptography related patents in the past.

To clarify, we specifically refer to signing transactions with a public key throughout our patent application’s content vs a private key. Here’s an explanation from Follow My Vote’s CTO, Nathan Hourt, as to why:

“With regards to the usage of the phraseology “the XYZ transaction is signed with the Voter Public Key,” and similar expressions within the patent application language, this is admittedly an unusual expression of the concept, and this stems in part from the fact that this particular cryptosystem is atypical among asymmetric (or public-key) cryptosystems, and also in part from the way our patent application endeavors to describe the technical processes in high-level, informative language but does not sacrifice accuracy to do so.

First, it is important to examine the unusual properties of the cryptosystem used in our system (and virtually all blockchain systems), namely ECDSA, and distinguish it from most asymmetric cryptosystems (take RSA as an illustrative example). In both ECDSA and RSA, a signature is generated by plugging the message and the private key into a formula, and out of that formula comes the signature. However, the verification process is quite different: in RSA, verification is done by plugging the public key and the signature into a formula, and out of that formula comes the message; however, in ECDSA (our cryptosystem), verification works by plugging in the message and the signature into a formula, and out of that formula comes the public key. This is a critical distinction: RSA and many other asymmetric cryptosystems cannot determine the signer’s identity from the message and signature, they determine the message from the signature and the signer’s identity, but ECDSA determines the signer’s identity from the message and the signature. In light of this, it begins to come clear how the package of the message and the signature could be described as being “signed with the public key” — the public key didn’t do any signing, but the signing embedded it into the message! The message and signature, by nature of the math, come with the public key — it’s just part of the package.

To clarify this meaning, consider a paper contract with a wet-ink signature. We could say “the contract was signed with a pen,” and this would be technically correct, but not particularly informative. We could also say “the contract was signed with the man’s name,” which is also technically correct, but offers a better description of the information conveyed by the signature. In the same way, the patent application says “the transaction signed with the public key,” it is not implied that the public key is the pen that created the signature, but rather that the public key is the information conveyed by the signature. If the patent application said “the transaction signed with the private key,” this would be similar to saying “the contract signed with the pen,” which is technically accurate, but less informative. In the same way as the pen attaches the contractor’s name to the document, the private key attaches the public key to the transaction. It is more informative, then, to say that the message is signed with the public key because this is the useful and relevant information conveyed by the signing, rather than to say that it was signed with the private key, which is not conveyed by the signature but was merely the tool used to make it.

The patent application attempts to clarify how this phrasing is intended in paragraph 0007 by saying “the public key […] signs the transaction, the private key is [used] to authorize the signing” — the public key is the information borne by the signature, but the private key is necessary to authorize one to attach that information to the transaction. It is important to be clear that the public key is the information borne by the signature, as the voter registration process described in FIG. 2 and paragraph 0019 demonstrates that the public key is what is registered to vote, and therefore a transaction with voting decisions must be signed, as per paragraph 0005, with the voter’s public key in order to be recognized as valid. This works because although the private key is necessary to attach the public key to the transaction, the public key is the only information which, like a contractor’s signed name, can be recognized as endorsing the transaction to have effect.

The intended meaning is that the public key is conveyed with the signature, and due to the mechanics of the cryptography, only one who holds the corresponding private key possesses the tool uniquely capable of conveying that particular public key, therefore the message signed with the public key must have come from one who holds the private key, and because the private key is never transmitted, it is extremely difficult for anyone to have the private key except the one who created it, giving the system and its users confidence that the transaction properly signed with a registered public key has the force and effect of the one who registered that public key, even though their specific identity can no longer be recovered.” – Nathaniel Hourt

What does all this mean for Follow My Vote and the voting industry at large?

Follow My Vote has always intended to publish our software as open-source; and, filing a utility patent application for our intellectual property was a strategic move from a defensive perspective.

After speaking with our patent attorney, we’ve come to the conclusion that we’ve done all that we need to do in order to protect ourselves from being sued from practicing our own invention down the line. With this in mind, and in the spirit of the open-source movement, we feel compelled to put our money where our mouth is and abandon our patent application as it exists today.

Moving forward, anyone that wishes to leverage our ideas in their voting system designs can freely do so; and, we hope they do! In other words, what this really means to those competing in the voting space is that these individuals and organizations can now freely innovate on behalf of “We the People” without the impediment of potentially infringing on Follow My Vote’s would-be IP, so that the best ideas can percolate to the top, be tested, and implemented over time.

With our release of this IP, we’re really hoping to spark a new era of innovation in the voting space and foster collaboration between the technology vendors that exist. We also hope to encourage a new wave of potential competitors to enter the voting arena and work toward building secure online voting solutions with true integrity.

For now, we at Follow My Vote have our hands full, as we work to lay the foundation for the development of a secure open-source end-to-end verifiable blockchain-based voting system. But, rest assured that, once we have the opportunity to bring our designs to life, we pledge that we will not attempt to market our solutions for widespread use until they have been battle tested by the brightest tech minds on the planet.

At the end of the day, the world needs to know it’s not about the money for us. Follow My Vote is about solving this global issue for humanity, once and for all, before moving on to the next biggest issue humanity is facing.

We are here to serve the people, plain and simple, and encourage you to follow us on our journey (and perhaps get involved) in the days ahead.

On Friday, September 2nd, Follow My Vote attended Virginia Tech’s Gobblerfest event to connect with students. Gobblerfest is an annual festival intended to engage students in campus activities and help them connect with the surrounding community while inspiring curiosity, civility and self-understanding.

Gobblerfest is a great way for students to meet each other, explore common interests, and become a part of the Virginia Tech community. Student organizations, businesses, non-profit organizations, and Virginia Tech departments offer food, games, free giveaways, and information at booths around the Virginia Tech Drillfield.

Creating Internship Awareness

Follow My Vote offers internships every semester. We are currently taking applications on our website and we wanted to make sure all Virginia Tech students were aware of these opportunities. Our marketing internship is our most popular internship. We teach interns how the world of digital media works. Interns build their skills learning branding techniques and marketing software used by companies and agencies around the world. Follow My Vote internships are a great way to prove value and earn a full time position at the company.

Blockchain Education

Follow My Vote was recently featured in Forbes for pioneering advancements in the voting industry with blockchain technology. We can now use software to safeguard against vote rigging and give voters the ability to verify that their vote was correctly cast.

Students welcomed our knowledge of blockchain technology and eagerly asked questions about how our voting software works.

The Raffle

Towards the end of the event, Follow My Vote held a raffle for some Hokie gear and Follow My Vote t-shirts. Here are the winners!

We had a great time at Virginia Tech’s Gobblerfest and we would highly suggest local businesses join us next year. Students held all sorts of booths for different clubs. We got some cool pictures of cars, breakdancing and displays students had created. See our Facebook album for all the pictures from the event.

We just learned today, August 29th, that hackers have breached the databases of not one, but two state board of election systems. This breaking news comes from a FBI “flash” alert that was given to state boards earlier this month and just emerged into the eyes of the public.

Follow My Vote has secured a copy of the original alert released by the FBI’s Cyber Division.

Which State Election Databases Got Hacked?

Right now we are not getting any official confirmation on which states had their systems hacked. Without mentioning specifics, The FBI alert reports that two states had their Board of Election databases compromised. Recent events however, give us all the clues we need.

On July 13, 2016, officials in Illinois went as far as to shut down the entire state’s voter registration system for 10 days.

During the breach, hackers were able to steal the personal data of 200,000 registered Illinois voters. This information aligns perfectly with what is described in the flash alert concerning a breach and theft of data. It’s likely the alert is referring to the Illinois hack.

The second hack can likely be attributed to Arizona. On or around June 30, 2016, The Arizona Secretary of State’s Office shut down part of their voter registration system due to finding malicious software on a computer used to log into the state’s voter registration system.

The Arizona breach is slightly less serious, as no data was stolen.

The Breach

The hack described in the FBI alert is a SQL injection. This type of attack is carried out by adding SQL (Structured Query Language) code to forms or input locations to gain access to backend data. SQL injections are currently the most common type of website hack. An attacker can often gain easy access to websites and their servers by entering code that the form does not expect to be inserted. The form will easily deny a wrong password or username, but when confronted with a totally different type of request, it opens a vulnerability. Specifically, it can allow hackers to view, manipulate, or steal all of the backend data.

Who Is Responsible?

We are not sure. There are 8 IP addresses listed in the alert as sources of the attacks. One of these IP addresses was listed as a source for both attacks, supporting the theory that one organization was behind both attacks.

An additional theory that is circulating the internet is that Russian hackers are responsible. The evidence behind this theory stems from a previous emergence of one of these IP addresses on a Russian hacker forum.

Where Do We Go From Here?

Some people are in favor of paper voting systems. It seems logical because hackers can’t manipulate or steal the information in the same manner. This is true. However, paper based voting systems are fantastic at negating all transparency. They create black boxes where you will never know if your vote was counted or got discarded. Top this off with human error and a small number of people counting the ballots, and elections easily become inadequate tools for true representation.

Ultimately, we need more transparency and better voting technology. Follow My Vote is dedicated to advancing and reforming voting technology around the world. The United States is one of many countries that are in dire need of innovation in the voting sector.

“These attacks are yet another reminder that something must be done to secure our election systems. If people can’t trust our elections systems, they are going to be much less likely to vote. Follow My Vote’s blockchain-based voting software is a complete end-to-end system that supports secure identity verification, voter registration, anonymous ballot issuance, verifiable vote casting, and tallying results. Blockchain voting is the future. The time is now!”

– Adam Kaleb Ernest, Co-Founder & CEO – Follow My Vote

This is a massive wake up call for a lot of people, especially following the Democratic National Convention hack. Those in the election industry have been aware of the lack of security. They have stood by watching voting machines get compromised and de-certified one after another.

Now is the time for innovative technology to help us vote better. We are at a point where we can use the tools of the past or use the tools of the future.

Learn about our Technology and get involved!

On Wednesday, August 3rd, Bitfinex was involved in a breach in where 119,756 bitcoin had been stolen from users’ accounts. This amounts to about $72 US Mil. Zane Tackett, Director of Community and Product Development for Bitfinex, informed Reuters of the breach. As a result of the breach, Bitcoin’s worth plunged 23 percent to just a bit under $550 per bitcoin. The details of the hack is similar to the 2014 hack of Mt Gox, in which $500 US mil was stolen. Tackett, assured that the breach did not “expose any weakness in the security of the blockchain.” The scandal highlights the risk of keeping cryptocurrency of centralized ledgers and is unique to their exchange. As of now, Bitfinex is unsure if the hack was an inside job or conducted by an outside force.

As a company that is devoted to providing a secure voting system, we feel obligated to comment on the hack as it uses our technology. It is important to note that the bitcoin blockchain has never been hacked, that the hack was conducted on a centralized exchange. This exchange is also by no means the largest, with the breach accounting for just 0.75% of the bitcoin in circulation. Our CTO, Nathan Hourt, commented on the hack by saying, “Indeed, the comments on how this is so bad and scary and this is what’s dangerous about crypto are quite strange… Why is this any more dangerous than any other bookkeeping? This is actually far less dangerous, since now there are cryptographically regulated procedures necessary to carry out changes on the database. A hacker must comply with those procedures, whereas before he was able to do anything he wanted once he hacked into the relevant computer(s).”

Not everyone is convinced that this hack is a legitimate hack either. As the story continues to unfold we will update this post with more information.

Politicon 2016 was an incredible event! Follow My Vote attended as an exhibitor, while CEO, Adam Ernest, spoke on a panel regarding rigged elections.

The non-partisan political conference took place in Pasadena, California, over June 25 and 26. Many well known politicians, tv hosts, and political thought leaders attended. Some of the most notable were Gov. Gary Johnson, Gov. Sarah Palin, Cenk Uygur, James Carville, John McAfee, Ann Coulter, and Ben Shapiro. See the full line up on politicon.com

Panel: Are U.S. Elections Rigged?

Follow My Vote CEO, Adam Ernest, participated in a panel hosted by the Free and Equal Elections foundation. Participants debated paper ballots vs. online voting, money in politics, gerrymandering, and alternative voting methods.

The room was packed to the gills. When the panel actually ended (due to time constraints), there were still people waiting to ask questions.

During the panel, Ernest educated attendees on the technology Follow My Vote uses to build secure and verifiable online voting software. He said:

“Blockchain technology has the ability to literally root out any potential for corruption in elections.

We are on a panel right now talking about if elections are rigged. I think an even better question would be: with the current processes and systems that are in place to conduct voting, the way we conduct voting today, is there a potential for things to be corrupted? And the answer to that question, in my opinion, would be yes.”

– Adam Ernest, Follow My Vote CEO.

Watch the video of the panel.

Ernest went on to discuss procedural security which is the security controls needed to prevent fraud and inaccuracy. This involves following rules or certain steps to mitigate identified risks. Anytime humans are involved in counting votes, registering people, giving people ballots, procedural security is necessary.

“We no longer have to rely on procedural security to ensure that there is security within our elections. Using blockchain technology, we can literally develop an end-to-end verifiable voting system. If we have the opportunity to leverage technology to make that a reality, the question is, why not?”

The panel not only discussed ending paper ballots, but also ending paper voting guides. Did you know California spends $12-14 million dollars every election cycle on paper voting guides, which are mailed to 17 million registered voters?

Listeners of the panel heard from Cenk Uygur, of The Young Turks. Cenk had valuable input on the ways the mainstream media responds and reports on rigged elections. He also shared interesting information on instances like Rhode Island shutting down 2/3 of their ballot boxes, which could be considered a form of election rigging.

Frank Atwood, of Approval Voting shared information on why approval voting should be used. Approval voting is a method of voting that gives 3rd party candidates a chance and produces a winner that the majority of voters support. Follow My Vote plans to demonstrate approval voting in the Parallel Election of 2016!

The Follow My Vote Exhibitor booth was well received at Politicon! People were excited to hear that verifiable voting is in the near future.

We answered lots of questions regarding how our system works and how we maintain security.

Out of all the discussion and talking, the most resounding thing people were excited about was our Parallel Election. We are going to demonstrate our voting technology alongside the 2016 U.S Presidential Election.

We also have a Kickstarter to help fund the Parallel Election! You can help elections become more honest and transparent!

Follow My Vote was featured on the radio show, Declare Your Independence with Ernest Hancock, on June 21st.

The reason why?

To promote our Kickstarter!

CEO, Adam Ernest and CTO, Nathan Hourt joined Ernest Hancock on his radio show to let listeners know about our Parallel Election. This election will run alongside the 2016 Presidential Election proving to the world that blockchain voting is a secure viable voting method.

We will also prove that people want verifiable voting and demonstrate that we can successfully include this feature while protecting anonymity and privacy.

Adam and Nathan joined several other key members from Porcfest on the air. Matt Philips, President of the Free State Project spoke along with Tarrin Lupo, author and schedule coordinator of Porcfest 2016.

Declare Your Independence with Ernest Hancock Radio Show is the product of FreedomsPhoenix.com “Over a period of years, Ernest Hancock envisioned having a news and current information website where anyone could quickly and easily post news articles, opinions, and links to stories on other sites about any subject they wished to bring to people’s attention. He wanted a site where visitors could find the real truth about what’s going on in the world and quickly get the information they needed to keep informed, rather than be subjected to the filters of a slavering collective mainstream media awaiting the approval of their government masters. FreedomsPhoenix.com was developed to satisfy those needs and has rapidly grown to include the work of writers and editors on many timely topics.”

Exhibiting In Politicon’s Democracy Village

Follow My Vote will have a booth in the Democracy Village at Politicon. We will be informing attendees on the ways Follow My Vote is advancing and reforming voting around the world. Additionally we will be educating people about blockchain technology and how our end-to-end verifiable voting software works.

We are also excited to tell people about our parallel election. To fund this demonstration of our platform we are running a Kickstarter. If you support honest elections and believe our voting systems should modernized, please donate.
