 Registering to Vote in Montana

In order to be eligible to vote, you must register to vote no later than the 30th day prior to the election by 5 pm. However, if you miss the registration deadline, you still have the option of registering in person at county election offices.

Qualifications

To be eligible to vote in Montana, you must:

  • Be a US citizen
  • Be a Montana resident who has lived in the state for at least 30 days
  • Be 18 years old by the date of the next election
  • Not be serving a sentence for a felony conviction
  • Not have been determined to be of unsound mind by a court of law

Where and How to Register

In Montana you may register to vote either by mail or in person.

To register to vote by mail, you must first complete the Montana Voter Registration Application. You must include one of the following for identification:

  • Montana driver’s license or ID number
  • The last four digits of your Social Security number
  • An ID that shows your photograph and your name
  • A copy of a document that shows your name and address, such as a bank statement, utility bill, or paycheck stub

Then, mail the application to your county elections office, whose address is provided on the application.

To register in person, deliver your application to your county elections office during business hours (8 am to 5 pm, Mon – Fri). You may also register at a Montana MVD office when you apply for or renew your driver’s license or ID card.
